How we helped a police officer from Chicago create a stunning, easy-to-use, and 24/7 accessible app for mental health well-being that can positively change its user’s life.

About Project
Loqui Listening is a Chicago-based on-demand platform that connects users with active, compassionate listeners whenever they need someone to talk to.
Whether you're looking to vent, express your thoughts, or simply have someone listen, Loqui offers 24/7 access to anonymous, non-judgmental listeners who are here to support you—no matter the time or topic. If you are feeling anxious, depressed, or just need a friendly shoulder to lean on, Loqui mental health application is always ready to help.
"1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental health challenges each year — and many don’t have someone to talk to.”
Interesting Facts
The client is a police officer with the Chicago Police Department, bringing a deep understanding of the emotional challenges people face daily.
The design of the app was intentionally clean and minimalistic, focusing on ease of use and emotional comfort. It took approximately 4 weeks to fully design and implement.
The main development phase lasted 4 months, during which the team tackled complex challenges related to real-time communication, cross-platform support, and dynamic monetization.
The client was highly involved throughout the project, actively shaping the product vision, attending planning sessions and demos, and providing valuable feedback that significantly influenced the final outcome.
The project is now in the support phase, with our team dedicating approximately 40–60 hours per month under a monthly retainer model.
Client Request
Our client is truly passionate about helping others. Earlier he was an active listener on a mental health support app that connected users with empathetic listeners. After the application exited the market, the client decided to build a new platform that continues this important mission. The fact is that every person may face some mental health issues from time to time, and giving a helping hand might even sometimes save someone’s life.
Afterall, the goal of the Lumitech team was to develop an application that offers on-demand access to supportive, non-judgmental listeners. Moreover, the app should be focused not on persons with mental disorders, but just common people who temporarily face certain difficulties. We needed to create a safe, anonymous, and empathetic space for users to share their thoughts and feelings.
Feeling stuck or extremely tired? Don’t know what to do in a tough situation? Loqui Listening allows you to talk anytime you need to be heard. The application can maintain your mental wellness and make you feel a bit happier.
Approach
To bring the client’s vision to life, we took a user-first and tech-forward approach. This means we were about to create an innovative app driven by the latest technology while keeping the user’s needs at the center of the design and development process. The app use should be easy, convenient, and understandable for lots of different categories of users.
So, we began with the following steps:
Performed detailed research on the current market landscape.
Analyzed key competitors.
Identified a number of gaps and unique opportunities.
This research guided the app’s feature set, user experience design, and market positioning. As a result, we were ready to create an app that would provide meaningful value where current solutions fail to meet user needs.

Tools
React Native. To develop a mental health app, we chose React Native. This solution helped us with an efficient cross-platform deployment for both iOS and Android, accelerating the time to market while maintaining a consistent user experience.
Twilio. To enable real-time, secure, and high-quality communication between users and listeners, we integrated Twilio. This solution powers the app’s voice call functionality with reliable performance and scalability.
Challenges
When building a seamless and reliable listening experience, our development team faced a number of technical and operational hurdles:
Twilio Integration in React Native While Twilio provides robust communication tools, integrating voice calls into a React Native app turned out to be challenging. One of the main issues during the mental health app development process was frequent instability and limitations with the official SDK. To overcome this in our wellness app, we developed custom native bridges. Furthermore, we extensively explored Twilio’s documentation and community forums to ensure reliable functionality across different platforms.
Android Device Compatibility Another issue during the Loqui Listening software development process was that supporting Twilio on lower-end Android devices was problematic. We faced issues with call quality, app crashes, and SDK limitations. These complications required writing additional native code and implementing specific optimizations. As a result, we succeeded in stabilizing our mental health mobile app performance on a wider range of devices.
Complex Payment System To create a mental health app, we used a billing model based on time spent in conversations, with users topping up balances through in-app purchases. Combining this dynamic billing logic with Twilio’s call tracking and ensuring compliance with platform-specific in-app purchase (IAP) policies was complex. We had to engineer a custom solution to sync call durations, user balances, and real-time deductions accurately.
Core Features
Anonymous Conversations The Loqui Listening users can express their thoughts and worries openly without revealing their identity. All conversations are 100% anonymous, secure, and confidential. Our mental health mobile application is a safe space for those seeking support.
Real-Time Listening The app enables secure, real-time voice calls between users and listeners using Twilio’s infrastructure. This ensures smooth and reliable communication that feels immediate and personal.
Smart Monetization System The platform includes a dynamic, usage-based monetization model. Talkers are charged based on minutes spent in conversation, while listeners earn directly as they provide support. Users can top up their balances using in-app purchases, seamlessly integrating payments into the listening experience.
Summary
Loqui Listening was one of the most exciting mobile apps we’ve worked on — an interesting domain, a meaningful mission, and a highly engaged client. The project combined technical challenges with a strong social impact, making it both rewarding and inspiring for the entire team.
