Reputable Health’s Mobile App: From Frustrating to Effortless Study Companion

About the Project

Reputable Health runs large-scale, real-world clinical studies using data from wearables like Oura Ring and Whoop, helping wellness brands prove whether their products actually work in everyday life. The mobile app is where this vision meets the user: people install it, connect their devices, join studies, and track how interventions affect their sleep, stress, or overall wellbeing.

By the time Lumitech joined, the app and its underlying codebase had already been in production for about three years. It had real users and real studies but the experience was slow, unstable, and difficult to evolve.

The task was clear: rebuild the mobile app for Android and iOS platform so that it could match the ambition of Reputable’s research platform and the expectations of modern users.

Interesting Facts

01

The original mobile app had very low ratings and received constant complaints: screens froze, interactions lagged, and errors were common.

02

During early demos, the app barely worked end-to-end; crashes and blockers were frequent, even though it was already in use by real participants.

03

The code quality of the legacy app was poor so that Lumitech and Reputable quickly agreed that it would be faster and safer to rebuild it from scratch rather than trying to resolve existing issues.

04

A single mobile developer started the rebuild, rewriting major user flows in the first two weeks, before the full team was expanded.

05

The new app had to support existing users as well. People had to be able to uninstall the old version, install the new build, log in, and continue their studies smoothly.

Client Request

Reputable Health wanted a mobile experience that did not just “function,” but represented their product vision: fast, reliable, and welcoming to both participants and research teams.

They asked Lumitech to:

  • Replace the unstable mobile app with a clean, modern version that feels smooth and trustworthy.
  • Keep study participants engaged and compliant over time, instead of losing them to frustration with bugs and slow screens.
  • Integrate reliably with the broader platform (web and AI engine) so users could join studies, sync their wearable data, and receive insights without friction.
  • Do all this under tight timelines, while live research and existing users could not simply pause.

Challenges

The mobile app work came with a set of very real-world constraints and difficulties:

Very limited context at the start

There was almost no documentation or single source of truth. Even on the client side, there were sometimes different views on how certain business logic should be implemented.

Design vs. data reality

The team often implemented features based on Figma and UX specs, and then, during testing discovered that data behavior needed to be different from what was shown in the designs. This created extra iteration loops.

Time zones and communication

The key person who could answer many business questions was 7–8 hours apart, which made alignment slower and required careful async communication.

Rebuild under pressure

The full rewrite of the mobile app and backend took around two and a half months, which is extremely fast for the amount of scope involved.

Migration of existing users

One of the hardest technical and product challenges was ensuring that users of the old app could log into the new one and continue their participation without breaking studies or losing data.

Our Approach

Being honest about the state of the legacy app, Lumitech and Reputable Health quickly aligned on a full rewrite. The goal was not to copy the old app one-to-one. Instead, it was to deliver a better product that preserved what worked, fixed what did not, and created a scalability potential for new features. Here is how we did it:

Started lean, then proved speed

Initially, one mobile engineer took the lead, joining all calls directly, clarifying flows, and rapidly rewriting core screens. Within the first few weeks, a large portion of the app was already rebuilt.

Introduced a new app with smarter behavior

Some screens kept similar user flows but almost all UI and logic were rebuilt, with an early focus on performance and responsiveness.

Parallel backend work

In parallel, backend developers rebuilt the API side, so the new app and server logic would be consistent and robust.

Respect for users

A key constraint was that existing participants had to continue their journey. User migration was treated as the first-priority requirement, not something we could probably do later.

In addition, while the majority of issues were resolved with custom code, the team also used low-code and AI-assisted prototyping to experiment faster with certain flows before finalizing them in the production.

Features

While tightly connected with the web platform and AI engine, the mobile app has its own set of participant-facing capabilities that Lumitech focused on making stable and intuitive:

01

Study participation experience

Users can join real-world studies aligned with their goals (like improving sleep or managing stress), see what is expected from them, and track their journey inside the app.

02

Wearable integration

Participants connect devices such as Oura Ring and Whoop, enabling automatic data sync instead of manual input.

03

Daily tracking and feedback

The app helps people follow their progress over time and see how their behaviors or products under test may be influencing their wellbeing, based on the data processed by the broader platform.

04

Onboarding and engagement flows

From first launch to ongoing use, flows are designed to be clear and lightweight, supporting higher engagement and better compliance with study protocols.

05

Performance-focused UI

Screens load quickly, state is handled more predictably, and error handling is explicit, reducing user frustration and drop-off.

Summary

The new Reputable Health mobile app, rebuilt by Lumitech, is no longer the “weak link” in the platform. Instead, it is a solid, user-friendly bridge between participants’ daily lives and the sophisticated research happening behind the scenes.

By rewriting the app from scratch, aligning closely (even across time zones), and treating performance and user migration as core priorities, Lumitech helped Reputable Health move from a laggy, poorly rated product to a mobile experience that actually supports engagement, compliance, and trust. While the AI engine and web platform power the analytics, the mobile app now does its part: making participation feel simple, stable, and worth coming back to.
